J Records signee Jazmine Sullivan and Grammy award winning Amy Winehouse are both amazing vocalists. Both ladies recorded the Thelonious Monk jazz classic, “‘Round Midnight” in recent years and put their own twist to it. It was interesting because it wasn’t until I listened to the words that I realized that it was even the same song.

I just familiarized myself with the Amy Winehouse version and you can listen to it below, but I am quite familiar with Jazmine Sullivan’s version, considering that it was one of the first few records I’ve heard from her. “‘Round Midnight” has been recorded in greater frequency than any other jazz standard composed by a jazz musician, so you’ve probably heard some more of your favorite artists sing it before.

I can’t make a decision, but in my opinion, both versions are great in their own way. But what do you think? Who sang it better? The troubled artist or the young newcomer?

Ok, I listened to both artist and I love the crack head, I mean Amy Winehouses version better. I can picture my self in at a Havanna night club in Cuba, with a white knee length, low cleavage dress, and white pumps, with a flower in my hair, and my dress just flowing in the caribbean breeze. Me and some papi dancing and spinning around on the dance floor to her song, rocking back and forth then embrassing real close and swaying. Just smelling the ocean air mixed in with fresh Island flowers, enjoying the night away, while I am tipsy from some kind of drink in a coconut shell and a pink umbrella…Damn….can I say airtran.com, NOW!!!!! lol

Now for Jazmine version it make me want to stand on the top of a building and jump due to boredom.

I heard Jazmine’s version a long time ago and I still enjoy listening to it now. I think what makes it so great is her vocal acrobatics in this song. It’s amazing that it was a live recording. This was the first time I heard Amy’s version & I enjoyed it. It’s fun to listen to.

After listening to this several times, all I can say is YES! Jazmine Sullivan is the TRUTH–Yea…even with the vocal gymnastics, it was soothing. Her vocal vocabulary and range is magnificent! Again, only one word to describe it–YES! Oh by the way, Amy Winehouses’ version is average–more of the same.
