Madea Goes to Jail CRUSHES this Weekends Box Office

Submitted by thecocktailcafe on Monday, 23 February 20092 Comments

madea goes to jail movie box office hit Madea Goes to Jail CRUSHES this Weekends Box OfficeI don’t know if Tyler Perry will ever get an Oscar award, let alone a nomination for his outstanding films, plays and his personal journey. The box office movie winner was “Madea Goes to Jail”, coming in at an outstanding $41.1 million dollars!

According to reports, it was the largest opening weekend gross on the fewest amount of screens ever (2,032) – and the highest grossing weekend opening in Lionsgate history.

Now, onto the Stereotype Issue…

Cross-dressing Tyler Perry’s alter ego grandma (Madea) may be reviled by movie critics and those who think Madea represents the worst in racial stereotyping. (”A life sentence…” and “Throw away the key…” were just some of the insulting headlines about the film Friday.) But the public sure loves her. AND SO DO I.

I saw the movie twice since it has been out. I loved it, very, very funny, I believe it is funnier than all the other movies that he has done. The only thing I was wondering about, was who was the amateur who did her brothers face. It really sucked, they could have invested some more money into getting his face done right. Other than that the movie is worth the money!!!!

I haven’t seen the movie as yet, but I definitely will. I love Madea and though my grandmother wasn’t like her, she is very similar to my sister in character. I really think my older sister is going to be a Madea type grandmother. As far as stereotypes, isn’t there stereotypes in all movies. Madea does not represent all black grandmothers and I don’t believe Tyler (yes I called him by his first name) is saying that. However, maybe this character is very real to him and real to others. I don’t believe she represents a black grandmother, but I do feel that we all, regardless of race, can relate to this character.
