And the Academy Award goes to Will Smith?

will smith seven pounds review And the Academy Award goes to Will Smith?

So there I was, having me time at the mall, on the phone with one of my best gal pals when she suggested I go to see Seven Pounds starring Will Smith (YUM). And for what? I thought seeing as he wasn’t going to be killing any aliens, cracking any jokes or showcasing that hot body he inherited after Ali. But of course I paid my money to see the film. After all, when a girlfriend recommends something, its gotta be good right?

Will Smith reunites with the directors and producers of The Pursuit of Happiness for the emotional, dark and beautiful drama Seven Pounds. In the film, Will Smith plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret and that’s all that I’m going to tell you. Why? Because there are simply so many terrible reviews out there already like this one,

Seven Pounds is yet another example of amateurish notions dressed up in a tight and seamless suit by technical pros who’ve never read or thought beyond the 101, and who build drama with emotional hydraulics and no real measure. That’s too bad, because the movie could have been as authentically “good” as Ben and Emily in the right hands, had its makers understood the dangers of indulgence.

What the hell did you say?

Although I did think that the beginning was a bit frustrating; Will Smith’s overall performance was outstanding. And who could deny the chemistry between Rosario Dawson who plays Emily Posa and Will as I often had to pick up my jaw from the ground in shock and envy (or maybe it was jealously). This is Will Smith at his finest, so give the man an Oscar already!

Check out the trailer below and leave me a comment if you saw the film already.

I heard a movie critic on the radio say that you don’t know what’s going on the first 15 min of the movie or so… and that some may not wanna see WILL go there. However, til I see the flick I can’t judge. Frost Nixon is on the top of my list this weekend!

Okay I saw it, mainly because I think Will is a very talented actor and I enjoy seeing him on the big screen (who doesn’t?). Honestly, I couldn’t figure out what this movie was about from the previews, and the trailer gave a little more info, but not enough to deliver the plot and story line (sooooo mysterious…oooo).

Will Smith plays Ben Thomas, a troubled character who is trying to make up for a terrible wrong in his life by giving the gift of a better life to deserving strangers. A good portion of the story wraps around his interactions with Emily Rosa, played by Rosario Dawson, but the scattered puzzle pieces of this plot reach far deeper than that.

You’re right, this is definitely a movie that you have to pay attention to in order to figure things out. It’s definitely a serious movie and probably not the ideal choice for a first date (go see something more comedic instead) or a night out with the ladies (chick flick!).

Overall I think Will did a great job in this role. My friend thinks that all his character needed was a little therapy and he would’ve been fine. I am still indifferent. I probably won’t see this one again, it’s one of those movies where once is enough. Instead I will watch one of his lighter comedies….HITCH… Can’t go wrong there! :o )

I’m very curious to find out what everyone else has to say who ventured out and saw this movie!
