It seems like event the fashion world is immune to the current economic situation! Following the trend for a smaller Fall 2009 presentation, Betsey Johnson will be unveiling her new collection at her 5,000-square-foot showroom, cutting costs by almost 50%. A typical Betsey Johnson runway show usually runs up a tab of $300,000 to $600,000. She’ll be ditching the Bryant Park tents this season? The Betsey Johnson house alluded to a much more rece$$ion-friendly line.

CEO Chantal Bacon said,

“Ms. Johnson is planning a limited-edition design collaboration with a retailer that will likely launch in the fall.”

Betsey didn’t disclose which retailer she’s going with, but stylish fashion bloggers and watchers assume it will be either H&M or Target, both of which have had similar deals in the past with designers.

The legendary designer (known for cart-wheeling down the catwalk) mother, and style goddess is looking into an intimate cocktail party (CHEERS!), where guests could see the collection up close cutting expenses by nearly 50%. The house isn’t the only one to look into a smaller alternative. DKNY (I’ve died and gone to Fashion Heaven), Vera Wang, and J. Mendel are all considering similar off-runaway presentations, with many more designers expected to follow “suit.”

In a statement, Ms. Vera Wang expressed how she felt the move is the appropriate one.

To do big shows, you really need shock and awe. You need big accessories, you need power and drama in staging and in the clothing. I want to see what I think feels politically correct and feels appropriate from a business point of view at this stage.”

I am SO SO excited about this juicy little bit of info from the Wall Street Journal’s fashion blog.

What do you guys think? Are you excited about this one?
