The 2009 Oscars Best and Worst Moments and Fashions
I must admit that I thought that Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony would put me to sleep so I decided to head over to Twitter for the Oscar party and boy was it awesome. If not for my cool mom twitter buddies like Djalfy, blogomama, and jamieharrington I would have wrote a completely different take on the fashions for the night.
The biggest problem I had with the Fashions were…
This clearly should have been a night of color and yet I saw a bunch of princess dress, wedding gown white garments and little to no accessories. I guess I was expecting a Bollywood meets Hollywood theme but instead, simplicity and what seemed a minimalist approach to accessories took center stage.
Everything from Angelina Jolie’s “seen it before” black gown accompanied by emerald earrings (hated it!) or, as in Beyonce’s case, her black and metallic dress was worn with no jewelry at all (yawn). And then there were the Cinderella Diaries depiction of princess dresses worn by Sarah Jessica Parker in Dior, Penelope Cruz in vintage Balmain Couture and Marisa Tomei in Atelier Versace. And lets not forget the adorable Anne Hathaway and that amazing dress (her voice aint bad either).
Best Dress and Moment of the night for me was when Kate Winslet (celebrity cocktail mom of the night) in Yves Saint Laurent accepted her award and gave her dad a shout out. But I was surprised that no one highlighted how AMAZING Taraji Henson looked for her first appearance at the Oscars for her role in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Taraji LOOKED AMAZING! (hair, make-up, jewelry, dress). Queen Latifah also rocked it out in her midnight blue gown by Georges Charkra.
On to the 2009 Worst Oscar Dresses
Whoopi Goldberg, Tilda Swinton, and Jessica Biel … why? WHY? – You Ladies were the worse dressed EVER for the 2009 Oscars Ceremony.
Check out my pics for the Best Oscar Dresses that evening AND THEN THE WORSE Oscar Dresses.

I Taraji looked great! I didn’t watch the whole thing, but I was so waiting for your post about the Fashion at the Oscar. I thought Whoopi Goldberg looked pregnant in her dress. Sorry but I really thought she did.
Your picks are totally on point. I agree with most of what you said. Many of the gowns were gorgeous, but like you I do not like the princess or wedding gown style that seems popular w/ so many stars. I prefer sleek and sexy. Taraji’s dress was lovely. She’s very beautiful. Ann Hathaway looked great. For some reason, Halle, Beyonce & Angelina just didn’t take my breath away. I did not like Angie’s emerald drop earrings. Queen looked so beautiful. She is a class act. Kate’s dress w/ interesting strap design looked very nice. That dress Whoopie wore I’m not sure what the hell she was thinking. Does she have a stylist? Oh well, we’ve always accepted Whoopie as she is. She’s never been a fashion icon.I heard ENews talking about Penelope’s bangs. Who cares about her bangs, her dress looked great. And she’s gorgeous with or without bangs. Like Michelle O did for inaugural, I think “conscious” stars are ditching lots of bling & glitz due to economic crisis. They don’t wish to throw their wealth around as much. I believe thats why we are seeing so many stars who we know have plenty of bling not wearing it to events. And on a final note, did anyone see the beautiful sparkling gown Michelle Obama wore to that event at WH that featured Earth Wind & Fire?
OMG, seriously. If not for the twitter party and the pre-oscar fashions, I would have went to bed.
Bollywood SO should have been the them. I mean color is good right? And then there was Whoopi… oh holy sh*t. First I was happy to see her in a dress but then when I looked closer and realized that it was a dead animal print, amongst other better dressed actresses, I felt sorry and then pissed the hell off.
And YES honey, I did see Michelle Obama at the EWF event.
BUT… here’s the kicker:
All of the stars were wearing what seemed to be Michelle Obama’s Inauguration Wedding Dress, with the one-shoulder design.
Did you notice that?
I am DjAlfy, and I am honored you mentioned me! Personally If I could I would wear princess dresses year round! Every day! I like being feminine, I like Ruffles, and Satin, and everything lady like, I like feeling gorgeous, and I love love love, my prince, where ever he may be. Now I am dating someone, but not sure he’s my 100% prince! Time will tell. Dresses should be fun, should be over the top, and darn it.. when you’re a single mom like me, the one time a year you get to go out.. damn it.. over dress, have fun. And Just be that princess!
Love xoxo Alfy
It was so fun watching together! You guys were SO much more interesting than my husband as Oscar buddies!
I LOVED Miley Cyrus’s dres… I mean that thing was FABULOUS… the only color I saw really was that weird pinkish purplish thing… I would have loved to see more intricate beadwork and fabulous colors!
[...] when I thought that the worse dress award went to Whoopi’s dead animal leopard curtains, Salma Hayek proved me wrong. Now, I absolutely adore this Latina celebrity mom and when Salma [...]
