Madonna’s Failed Adoption prompts a New Home in Malawi
Should Madonna be allowed to adopt another Malawi child?
On Friday, April 3, Modonna, 50, filed a notice to appeal her failed bid to adopt a three-year-old girl named Chifundo “Mercy” James, after the High Court turned down the singer’s application and warned the case could open the door to trafficking in children.
The recently-divorced pop diva and actress went to Malawi on March 29 with daughter Lourdes, 12. and David Banda, 3, whom she adopted in 2006 after seeing him in an orphanage.
Here’s where the controversy started:
Anyone seeking to adopt in Malawi must have been resident in the country for at least 18 months — which was waived in the case of Banda. According to the judge who rejected her adoption last week, Madonna hadn’t lived in Malawi for the required 18 months.
But that’s not stopping her from trying again because she’s building a home in Malawi. An inside source reveals,
“Madonna has a big, beautiful plot of land over there already. She’s planning to build a girl’s school in the Chinkhota village and those designs are well under way. But she’s gone back to the designers and asked if they could accommodate a family home on the plot or on adjacent land.”
Malawi is one of the world’s poorest nations, with more than half of the population of 12 million living on less than one dollar a day.
Madonna has set up a charity called Raising Malawi that provides support for orphans as well as a community centre at Mphandula village, 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Lilongwe, which looks after more than 8,000 orphans from scores of villages in the area.
African babies are the new “in thing” and I’m not mad at all. Go head Madonna, Angelina, Salma, and I encourage anyone else to do the same.

I wish all these celebrities wouldn’t adopt so many children. Instead they should help poor people with donations, so they can raise their children themselves.
