Salma Hayek Breastfeeds Starving African Babies

Submitted by thecocktailcafe on Wednesday, 11 February 20093 Comments

I’ll never forget the stories that my grandmother used to tell me when I was growing up as a child. When we lived Guyana (in South America), she would visit the hospitals and offered her breast milk to other babies whose moms either left them there or when they simply could not nurse. This is common practice in the caribean or in other third world countries BUT, when I saw the video of Salma Hayek (a spokesperson for UNICEF) breastfeeding starving, African babies from Sierra Leone, I almost broke out in tears… of joy of course!

“I actually think that my baby would be very proud to be able to share her milk, and when she grows up, I’m going to make sure she continues to be a caring, generous person,” says Hayek.

In the video, Salma says she isn’t the first in her family to offer her breast milk to a starving child — her great-grandmother also offered her breast milk years ago in Mexico.

Absolutely! I wish there was a easy & efficient way to distribute breast milk to hungry children everywhere.

I remember hearing about a breastfeeding bank where women can store their breast milk to be used by other woman who would prefer their children to have breast milk but cannot produce it themselves. I believe these women have to live a certain lifestyle and eat certain things. I thought it was weird at first, but I could not deny a starving child any food, whether breast milk or formula.

I agree. Although, just that thought of doing it when I was younger made me gag, I too could not let a starving baby go hungry.

Like Rain Pryor said on last week’s radio show, when your breasts are engorged, you’ll stick that breast in the next child’s mouth…lol
